Here is my top tips and tricks that I use to get the most out of my powerwall. Make sure you keep checking this page for new tips and tricks.
- Check the forecast for the next day to determine how much power you will need, and if there is a likelihood of a power outage. With Storm Ciaran on the horizon, I will be making sure I charge my powerwall to 100% every night, as I know I will not be getting as much solar and I need the heating to be on if the power goes down.
- Check if you are currently on the best electricity tariff, as many suppliers have recently been cutting their prices on their economy 7 and electric car charging tariffs. It's important that you keep abreast of the tariff changes to ensure you are charging your battery at the most economical rate. For example, EDF has announced the cheapest tariff at just 8p per kWh overnight.
- Make sure to remember to set the backup reserve percentage to your normal daily minimum when you move onto your tariff's electricity day rate. Obviously, this varies from supplier to supplier, so make sure you know when that is. For example, we are currently with EON Next, which gives 7 hours of overnight charging between the hours of midnight and 7. However, the EDF tariff is only between midnight and 5 am.
- If you have an electric car, plan your car charging to ensure that it coincides with your powerwall charging because you wouldn't want to take power out of your powerwall to charge your electric car's battery.
- Get to understand your daily usage, so that if you're filling your battery, you don't need to keep an eye on the overall battery percentage throughout the day to ensure you don't export electricity unnecessarily. Particularly, if you are on a "fit export tariff," the perfect scenario is to never export electricity.
